ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE PROGRAM

INTRODUCTION

The College of Chicago English as a Second Language Program is designed for those seeking to develop the social and academic language skills required for living in an English-speaking workplace, school and/or community. Our program has classes for all English proficiency levels. We currently offer six levels of classes: beginning, high-beginning, intermediate, high-intermediate, advanced and fluency. Whether you are a beginner hoping to learn the basics of English, or an advanced speaker trying to enter an academic or career field, we have the right program for you. 

Our qualified instructors use a student-centered approach and a variety of activities to provide dynamic, outstanding ESL education. We take pride in our small class sizes and personalized instruction to ensure that each and every individual student receives appropriate feedback. At The College of Chicago, our objective is to help students meet their language needs and become one of the best English schools in Chicago.

CLASS SCHEDULE

DAY: 9:00 am - 2:00 pm Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday  

EVENING: 5:30 pm - 10:00 pm Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 

Friday Workshops Available. For ESL students who would like extra practice to further develop their writing and test-taking skills, we offer workshops every Friday that target those specific skills. These workshops are recommended for ESL students who would like more intensive practice that focuses on academic writing and test-taking strategies required for major English proficiency exams, such as the TOEFL iBT® and IELTS™.   

CORE COURSES LEVELS

  • COC ESL 100 - Beginning ESL
  • COC ESL 200 - High Beginning ESL
  • COC ESL 300 - Intermediate ESL
  • COC ESL 400 - High Intermediate ESL
  • COC ESL 500 - Advanced ESL
  • COC ESL 600 - Fluency and Conversation

REQUIREMENTS & CLASS SIZE 

To apply for the ESL program, you must have a high school diploma or equivalent. Each classroom has no more than 10 students, guaranteeing maximum student-teacher interaction.

COURSE STRUCTURE

9:00-10:00 am News Hour
10:00-11:30 am Core Class
11:30-12:00 pm Lunch Break
12:00-2:00 pm Core and Elective Class

UPON COMPLETION OF THE PROGRAM, STUDENTS SHOULD BE ABLE TO:

  • Develop speaking and listening skills required for social communication
  • Learn to use and recognize a variety of vocabulary, idioms and slang expressions appropriate in social contexts
  • Use a wide range of grammar structures with accuracy and fluency
  • Study life skills relevant to their community and goals as English speakers
  • Practice composing written correspondence needed for school, community and workplace; and
  • Demonstrate knowledge of North American and English-speaking cultures.
